“Ro' conveniently didn't mention it,” Marie said, “but I doubt we'll be allowed to leave Iapetus peacefully.”

She and Tell were walking towards the market. She was ticking off in her mind the sort of goods they'd have to acquire and what it would cost them. The favours she'd have to call in were mounting faster than she cared to consider; she was trying to avoid thinking about the favours she'd have to extend. Being the Nagus had its benefits but they were by no means limitless. In fact, she thought sourly, it's not at all what it's made out to be. Everyone wants a piece of me. Everyone wants me to do something for them; no-one wants to do anything for me because they believe everyone else is already doing it. Or, at least, that's what they like to believe. She knew it was nothing more than a convenient excuse but it was a persuasive one. Persuasive and pervasive.

Still and all, she had to admit that she enjoyed being the Nagus. It appealed to her vanity and it appealed to her ethics; or lack thereof. She enjoyed the fact that a strongly paternalistic society was ruled by a woman. She never tired of reminding them of that and rubbing their noses in it.

“While you're getting stuff for the engines, I'll be looking into getting the phasers and cannons working again. Oh, and could you get whatever you're likely to need for the shields.”

"I'll see what I can do," Tell replied. "Here, try this. It'll put some wind in your sails." Tell handed her a dark green bottle. "I have a friend ship me over a crate or so of this now and then. Was going to save it for a special occasion. So this is a hell of an occasion to drink it because I sure as hell won't remember it when we get back."

“Long as that's all it puts wind in,” Marie muttered. “Mind you, if we don't drink it now we might never get the opportunity. That would be a waste.” She took a healthy swig and spluttered uncontrollably, “That's good stuff, Tell,” she said, taking another swig. Now, as to payment. She handed Tell a small disc. “Show them that. The bill will go straight to the Ferengi Treasury. Credit will appear on their account immediately.” She leant in closer to Tell as they walked. “Mind you,” she added consiprationally, “no actual money will change hands but they won't know that until we're gone...or we're dead. With Ro' around the second is always an option.”

"Might just treat myself to a new pair of boots with an outfit to match then. If I'm going to go out for good this time I think I'll go out in style. Can I get you something too, Marie? You never know, we might just attract some attention."

“We attract far too much attention for my taste,” Marie replied. “No, I know what you mean,” she said with a deprecating gesture. “You choose something. I was never much good at that style thing. The childhood I led didn't offer much scope for it.” She walked a few more yards before speaking again. “You don't think we're a bit old for it do you,” she asked. “There's an old saying mutton dressed as lamb. The way I feel right now, mutton would be a youngster. And I'm sure I look far worse than I feel.”

"Look who's calling old! I still know how to party," replied Tell in mock disgust.

“Then I'll see you back here in...let us say two hours? Will that be sufficient time?”

"Yes, that should give me enough time to get some high fashion clothes and accessories for us both... Oh, you mean for the Fhew? That will take no time at all, may as well finish this bottle now then and start another when we get back."

Tell handed Marie the green bottle. She watched her take the last good slug and discard it in the gutter. The engineer thought that there had to be a way of remembering things from the future so she could take them into the past if Jared's plan was ever going to work.

"I turn right here Marie. See you later"

Right turn. That'd be a first for me if I made the right turn, Marie thought.
