The cottage was dark as Mike and Tell entered the cottage. Mike waves her hand over a sensor and the lights flicker on. Mike leads Tell over to one of the beds in the back of the cottage and lays her down.

"I just need to get my gear, stay there." She says and heads back out to the car to retrieve her bags.

Tell lay back in the comfort of the bed thinking that she could now relax but a terrible thought came to her and her heart quickened in its pace. She knew that Gerrat would come looking for her eventually and she had put both their lives in danger. Was the cottage well enough away from Gerrat for him not to bother searching for her?

Fearfully Tell tried to get up, they weren't safe here. The only safe place would be off planet and she had no means of doing that. She gently eased her legs over the side of the bed knowing that in her state she wouldn't be able to get far.

The door to the bedroom opened slowly and Tell thought that Gerrat had found her. She was terrified and shook uncontrollably.

Mike walks back into the bedroom to see Tell partially out of bed. She walks over and puts her bags down. "Easy now. You're safe here. Lets have a good look at you and see what I can do to help."

Mike examines Tell from head to foot. "I won't push if you don't want to tell me what happened." She says, reaching into her bag for bandages, and begins stopping some of the bleeding.

She pulls out a hypospray. "This should numb the pain, but it won't knock you out." She pushed it against Tells unbroken arm. She then reaches into her bag and pulls out a cast.

"Amazing what you can get out of places when you're leaving." Mike applies the cast to Tells arm. Then pulls out an autosuture. "Please hold still for me." She moves to begin suturing Tells neck.

The pain went instantly but it didn't do anything to allay her fears of being discovered. "I'm Theresa Hope," she began "and I'm afraid I might have put both our lives in danger."

Tell told her everything in as short a detail as she could manage ending with Garret and how wonderful it had been to begin with and how it all went wrong only a few short hours ago.

"It was probably my fault," sobbed Tell finally "If I had just given into him, he wouldn't have got so out of control. Are we well hidden here? I'm so afraid."

"First of all. It's not your fault. Men who do this will always do it, no matter what you do. They will find fault in the smallest thing and make you pay for it." Mike continues to patch Tell up, then pulls out a bone regenerator. "This may hurt despite the painkillers." Mike raises the device to Tells jaw. And just before she begins says. "My name is Michelle Young. I wish we could have met on better circumstances."

The Regenerator did its job, fixing Tells jaw quickly, then she moved to the arm, repeating the process, then the ribs.

Mike leans back on her knees. "Right, how about we figure out what you are going to do now. I'm leaving in the morning, I've been re-assigned."

"Re-assigned?" asked Tell

"As in leaving the planet. I was only here for a short time to consolidate my skills. StarFleet has a ship board assignment for me."

"Can you give me a lift somewhere a shipyard perhaps where I can get off planet before he finds me. I'm an engineer I should be able to get a job somewhere but I need to leave soon."

"I maybe able to do one better." Mike smiles. "I maybe able to take you with me."

Tell looked at her unbelievably, she'd never made it off world before but had always wondered what it might be like. If Michelle could help her then she might be able to carve a new life out for herself.

"How would you do that?" she asked "I'm not sure you would get away with it."

“I mean get you onto the ship I am taking to the nearest starbase were my assignment waits.” Mike says calmly. “I wouldn’t normally do this, but for some reason I seem to see a lot of me in you. You would be surprised what you can get away with.” She smiles. “We’ll stay here tonight as I’m not due in until 1000 hours.”

"Thank you so much for helpig me Michelle," answered Tell feebly, suddenly feeling exhausted and longing to close her eyes. "I can sleep on the couch in the other room, I can't take your bed off you."

“You can have the bed; I’ll sleep in the lounge.” Mike stands and heads for the living room.

"Thanks."

A few hours passed, and Mike was sitting on the lounge reading from her PADD when the sound of screeching breaks could be heard in the distance, and it sounded like it was coming towards the cottage.

Mike calmly put her PADD down and continued to listen to see if the sounds grew closer.

Minutes later, she heard the same screech, but it sounded like it was right out the front, then there was the sound of a car hitting something.

‘I hope that was a tree and not my car.’ Mike thought as she stood to go look.

Just as she was about to reach for the door, it flew open to reveal a large man, with nothing but an expression of pure anger and rage on his face.

“WHERE IS SHE?!?!” He shouted into the small cottage, right in Mike’s face.

The sudden noise woke the injured Tell up. Her heart pounded in her chest and sounded so loud in her ears. She was terrified for Michelle as well as for herself. She had no means of escape and no strength to fight back. She glanced quickly around the room to see if she could use anything to use as a weapon.

“Where is who?” Mike asks calmly, one hand slowly moving down to her right hip.

“YOU KNOW PERFECTLY WELL WHO!!” He shouts. “THERESA! MY WIFE! I WANT HER BACK NOW!!!”

“She is currently in my care, and is not leaving until I deem her ready to do so.” Mike says in the same calm voice.

He laughs and bends down so he is right in Mike’s face. “And who is going to stop me, you?”

“Yes, me.” Mike says. “She is my patient in my care and if you want to forcibly remove her you will have to go through me.”

He laughs again. “I will if I have to.” He says again. Mike could tell by the fact that he was still taunting her that he was nervous about attacking someone he didn’t know.

“Then do it. Don’t just stand there and make empty threats.” Mike’s hand reaches the small, metallic object on her hip and comes to a rest there.

It is clear to see that the man was getting angrier and angrier; he was almost at breaking point. Then, almost without warning, he swings at Mike, aiming for her head.

Mike steps to one side and deflects the blow to one side, whilst swinging in with her own strike, collecting him in the stomach, making him double over in pain. Mike takes a step back.

“You leaving now, or am I going to have to continue?” Mike says, her voice still as calm as it was when he entered.

Tell was listening to the raised voices behind the door from a corner of the room she was in. She drew her knees up to her chest and wrapped an arm round them. The only thing she had to defend herself with was a table lamp and that wouldn't last long. She felt sick with fear.

Suddenly, he leaps at Mike from the floor, tackling her to the ground and landing a solid strike to her stomach, catching her off guard and winding her. Mike manages to push him off and roll to her knees whilst clutching her stomach.

Tell heard so many crashes, thumps and groans from the next room and she feared the worse for her new friend. She feared for both their lives and imagined Michelle and herself lying dead on a bloodied floor with her so called husband gloating over them. Tell swore that of she ever got out of this alive she would learn how to fight no matter what.

It suddenly went quiet and Tell heard nothing but her own heart pounding in her ears. There was no way out and she squeezed herself more into the corner of the room as if it would protect her. Why didn't she learn to fight in stead of dance and play the violin. She might have been able to stop him.

She jumped when the door slowly opened and could hardly bear to look. She was feeble, weak and worth nothing to anybody. No one would miss her when she died at the hands of a cold brute such as Garrat. Perhaps it was her turn to die at least then she would be with her family and the mother she had so desperately needed.

A small sob caught in her throat and she gripped the lamp tighter. The door opened wider and he stood there breathing heavily, wiping the blood away from the side of his mouth. Sweat trickled down his forehead and Tell knew that Michelle had put up a good fight.

“Right bitch, you’re coming with me.” Garrat snarls at Tell. He strides forward, grabs Tell by the hair and yanks her onto her knees as he starts dragging her out of the room.

Tells head was reeling with the sudden pain, her arms were flailing around her trying to hit him with the lamp. She just wasn't strong enough anymore. "Kill me now..." she begged "Get it over and done with now..."

Garrat laughs. "Kill you? Oh no. I'm only just starting to have my fun with you." He smiles saddistically.

The door opened again and it was a while before Tell realised who was standing there.

"Let. Her. Go." Mike says through gritted teeth. She then pulls something off her belt, and with a simple flick of her wrist brings forth the blade that is retracted inside. "Not only am I trained to use this, being a Doctor I know EXACTLY where to put it to do the most damage in one go."

Tell was dropped to the floor like a used rag. She heard Garrat sigh impatiently.

"Get out while you still can," warned Tell "Forget about me just save yourself."

"Certainly not. This bastard needs putting down SEVERAL pegs." Mike states. She looks back at Garrat. "Just you try me one more."

Garrat glares back at Mike, and gets ready to pounce.

"You just keep getting in my way don't you? Will you never learn?" he snarled "Pity we didn't meet sooner you would make a great wife. Now get out of my way or I'll make you get out of my way."

"I would never have come near you with a 10ft stick if you had made 'moves' on me. You are a vile, petty and narcissistic asshole." Mike says. "Guess you will have to make me get out of your way."

Without any warning he pounced on Michelle like a wild animal. There was murder written in his eyes.

Mike casually stepped to one side and put out her leg, tripping Garrat up and sending him sprawling across the living room floor, going head first into a solid wooden dresser.

For a few seconds he lay there and it only served to fuel his anger even more he pushed himself up on his elbow. "You fight like a ...."

He didn't get to finish the sentence as Tell smashed the heavy base of the lamp down on his head. After that he didn't move but he was still breathing.
Tell hit him again and again with what was left of the lamp.

Mike quickly retracts the blade and grabs Tells arm. "Easy. He's out cold. You don't want a murder on your hands." Mike pulls the lamp carefully out of her hands and puts it to one side, then embraces her. "It's alright, it's over."

Tells sobbed her heart out with such pain and anguish that it almost broke Michelles heart to hear it. Finally Tells cries subsided. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been here. He would have killed me for sure."

Tell took the wedding ring off her finger and threw it across the room. It landed in the ashes of the fire.

"Well, we don't have to think about that do we?" Mike steps back. "One thing is for certain though, we need to leave now rather than in the morning. We can stay at a hotel near the Spaceport till the shuttle leaves."

Mike begins gathering up her bags. "Sounds like he totaled his car when he got here, I just hope mine is ok." Mike moves for the door.

"I can fix that if it isn't." Tell answered

They dampened down the fire and left the cottage in darkness. Michells car looked a bit bashed in but luckily it started straight away. It soon disappeared into the darkness leaving the horror behind and Tell felt lucky to be alive. She would never see Garrat ever again.
