'Shades of grey wherever I go
The more that I find out the less that I know
Black and white is how it should be
But shades of grey are the colours I see'

"Fall back" Tell snapped the order to the others "We must protect the civilians"

"Where too" said the soldier arms wide gesturing all the destruction around her "There's nothing to retreat to and...."

Tell had to think quickly she had no idea where to retreat to, this wasn't her war, this wasn't her battle, she didn't belong here, she wanted out and she wanted out now.

"Breyberris Hill" Tell suddenly blurted out. How did she know that? Where had that come from? "Breyberris Hill, the old mine, the tunnel on the north side" It would give them some protection for a short time.

"Its not safe Sir the tunnels are flooded ...."

Tell gave him a look as if to say 'We would be better off there than here'

"Aye Sir Breyberris Hill it is then."

They brought the group together, injured men, old men, women and children all in shades of grey. All frightened, terrified looking at her for help and guidence. All that she could offer them was a run down unsafe mine that she had dared to play in with her brother as a child, or this. What choice did she have all that was behind them was sudden death, ahead of them in the mine would lie uncertainty and then a fragment more time. Then certain death would just take that little bit longer.

Tell looked above her at the blood red sky that was streaked with orange and yellow. It could be the last time she would see this sky. She felt a small child tap her on the leg and Tell bent down to her. In her arms the little girl carried a raggedy doll made of cloth.

The engineer knelt down to the little girl whose face was smudged from dust and grime. She had been crying and her tears had left riverlets of clear skin down her cheeks. The dress she was wearing had once been white with bright little flowers but was now grey and drab. She was undernourished and her legs like two fragile thin sticks. It cut the engineer through to the bone.

Tell wasn’t used to being so near children, what on earth was she going to say. She offered her a smile but Tell needn’t have worried. The words came unbidden, natural and flowed through her mind.

“Hello, I like your dolly” said Tell “What’s her name”

The girl looked from Tell to her doll and rocked her from side to side making small soothing noises.

“Her names Brianna” a small child voice answered “I have to look after her, she’s very scared”

“And what’s your name” Tell asked. She brushed some stray blonde hair away from the girls face.

“Alise” she replied. Overly bright blue eyes that had witnessed scenes no child should ever have to witness, laid a small hand on the soldiers shoulder. “I’m six”

Tell picked up Alise and issued orders to her two remaining soldiers.
“Were moving out” she told them “Keep everyone together, stay alert”

Tell stood up and just for a moment something drifted across her field of vision. She stared hard at the apparitions who reminded her of someone. All thoughts of Ro’ and the Fhew were only now just on the verge of her memory another minute and she would forget them altogether.

“I...have....to....go” was all Tell could manage to say to them.

Ro' had fired at the remaining damaged auto sentry in the command officer where the dead Hegrup lay. There was no sign of Jared. Suddenly Tell had opened fire and the other Beq had only just got under cover in time. She started rambling and movig about like she was drunk, or delusionary. Now she began to move off throught the door oposite to that which they had come in. Ro' examine the panel and saw the command screen still active. Someone had turned on the auto-sentries but at least they had left an easy way to turn them off again. With a few presses he heard the broken assembly behind him fold up.

,'. Ro to all teams. The automatic defences should be off line now. Be aware that it appears jared turned them on. He is not answering hails, so should be considered dangerous. ,'.

He looked to the Beq and then gestured after Tell, "Follow her. She seems to be opening the doors and might lead us right to Jared. If you find him, don't kill him straight away."

ON
Personal log, Message to Captain Maltern.
My dearest, I haven’t heard from you for a while Mal. I have no idea where you are but I hope your safe. It’s been so bad here, we’ve fallen back. I don’t hold out much hope for..... us.

There are only three of us left myself, P’rez and Timor with a hundred and four civilians. Were heading on up the road to Breyberris Mine. Your shocked aren’t you? If you were here you would be trying to stop me. After what happened up there all those years ago. You think I want to go back? I have no choice. It will buy us some time a few hours at least. If the Vulcans don’t kill us the mine surely will. We won’t go to deep and stay near to the entrance.

Off

Doors opened in front of her as Tell made her way outside. It was twilight and a safe time to move to Breyberris village and the mine further up the hill. It was all that mattered now. She had to keep them all safe. Alise had fallen asleep in her arms and Tell knew that she would do anything to protect the little girl.

All thoughts and memories of Tell's own life had vanished now. There was no Fhew, no crew, no Klingons, no Starfleet. She was caught up in the planets past and living out a story that was to have such tragic consequences.
