Marie felt really unsure of herself. It was not a particularly unusual feeling but in this instance....

She felt the need for...she was not exactly sure what but she knew there was only one person who could help. She was a human in a Klingon ship. If anyone knew what that meant, it was Marla. They'd been through much together – that barren planet being only the latest example. But....

She didn't have a clue about Marla. To be honest, Marla probably didn't have a clue about her either. So....where to begin?

"At the beginning", came to her. "Yes, she told herself. That's the way to go".

She knocked on Marla's door then reminded herself where she was and gave it a resounding thump.

Marla jumped as the knock sounded on the door. Then she silently cursed herself. Her Human half was startled, not something that her Klingon half enjoyed. She wondered who could be at the door. No one ever came to visit her.

"Come in."

"Marla," Marie began hesitantly. "I need your advice. Matlh's passed me over for promotion again. What do I need to do on this stinking ship besides the usual route of beating someone to a pulp? If I try that, it'll be me ends up as pulp. I've rescued Matlh from prison; I've salvaged centuries old weapons of mass destruction; I've scavenged parts; I've acquired other parts from sources Matlh doesn't even dream exist. If it wasn't for me, this ship would be wallowing in space without propulsion or the hope of restoring it! What more do I need to do?"

It all came out as a stream without pause for breath. Now Marie gulped deeply.

Marla had to think for a minute. She had gotten her promotion by throwing a pot of hot soup on Ro's head, Tell had gotten hers by beating up a few marines. It was starting to seem to Marla that Ro' prefered his crew almost beaten to a pulp before they could get a promotion.

"I honestly don't know a lot of what you can do. I would have suggested working toward it, but you have done that. The only thing I can truly suggest at this moment is that I can help train you to fight. Other than that I will have to think about it. If this were a human ship, you would have gotten your promotion by now. Unfortuanately for you, this is no human ship, this ship belongs to a full blooded, warrior Klingon, who likes to see his crew bloody."

"That's not a lot of help," Marie snapped. She immediately regretted it. "I was hoping that, as you're half human, you'd have had some experience in dealing with this sort of situation. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe..." She half smiled. "Maybe I just have to find my own solutions."

Marla wished there was something she could say, but she didn't have any ideas. "Yes, I am Half-Human, and I have had to deal with that my entire life, and it hasn't been easy. On this ship you need to learn to act a little less human, and more like a Klingon if you want to get anywhere, I think. It's been a challenge, even for me. Tell is a full human, and she seems to be doing pretty interesting job of it."
