Marie slipped quietly out of the courtroom.
Her detective work so far had yielded little result. Finding out about the trial was simplicity itself but the charges had been vague. That is to say, they were specific enough but they contained no detail. Now, at least, she knew what was being smuggled and by whom. Importantly, it wasn’t her own contraband that was in question though it was only a matter of time before the FHew was searched. Any half decent team – and she assumed the Ubatti were – would turn up items not listed on the official manifest.

With the ship impounded there was nothing she could do about that. Well...there was. She had to clear the crew’s name and get the ship released and out of here before any search took place.

She pondered the questions as she descended the stairs from the courthouse building. The captain didn’t seem like the type to be involved in smuggling. Not that he would tell a lowly beq like Marie St. Helene if he was. Anyway, it didn’t fit in with the trips they’d been making lately. You don’t smuggle arms when the Head of your House is on board. Diplomatic immunity is a useful tool for a smuggler but...no, he isn’t that stupid, is he? She decided in the negative and took that as her starting point. A new thought struck her: could it be that the Nausicans used fake House Matlh badges to cover their own activities? She wouldn’t put it past the slimy apes.

Questions, questions but now that she had a clear idea of exactly what was involved. As Sherlock Holmes famously put it, only a fool forms a theory before all the facts are in. She knew who she had to go see and what favours she needed to call in.
