"... should have seen the look on his face when he realized he had been defeated by a bunch of raw recruits," Masters gloated to the crew of the FHew.

They were gathered in a meeting room and drinks were being handed around. The Starfleet officers were drinking synth-champagne from replicated crystal flutes. The Klingon crew were quaffing Bloodwine substitute from metal mugs. Both crews were mingling well. There was talk of a rematch and friendly banter about who would win in a second exercise.

Marie dipped a goblet into the bloodwine and handed it to Tell. Then she did the same for herself. Despite her vague French heritage she did not think much of champagne: real or synth. The bubbles went up her nose and, in her opinion, it lacked any body. During her time on the FHew she had grown used to the earthiness and fullness of bloodwine.

Commander Davis and Ro' were standing in one corner talking about the performance of each of the respective crews when a young lieutenant entered the room and hurried over to them. There was a brief discussion and the glasses were suddenly put down.

"Attention everyone!" Ro' bellowed, full of seriousness.

The two crews turned to find out what new thing had happened. Davis stepped forward, "We have just received a report that the Klingon fleet at Q’Tahl was devastated in the opening salvo of the Gorn’s declaration of war against the Klingon Empire. Though Klingon battle practice rarely leaves many ships able to limp away from battle, the size of the force gathered at Q’Tahl for wargames has resulted in a large number of vessels arriving at Tengchah 20 in need of repairs and medical assistance, which is straining the capabilities of the space station.

The USS Prospero is ordered to report to Tengchah 20 to provide the Klingons with whatever engineering and medical assistance that can be provided. Starbase 48 in orbit of Cestus III is standing by to transport additional supplies and personnel as requried."

Ro' picked up the conversation, "The FHew will head straight for Tengchah 20 with any weapons and supplies the Prospero can spare. KDF High command is expecting the Gorn to push their advantage to Tengchah 20 so we need to be ready for a fight."

"Meanwhile, the Prospero will detour via Cestus III for resupply of weapons," Davis continued, "and join you as soon as we are able. There will not be time for crew rotations. You are all now about to become active crew."

"This is a baptism of blood and fire! We will procure great honour for ourselves in the coming battle."

All eyes turned to see who in the crowd spoke these last words and were surprised to see the Vulcan Synic's impassive face. Obviously something from his time on the FHew Bridge had rubbed off.

"Indeed," Ro' allowed. "There will be no other time for a formal briefing, so if you have questions, ask them now."

“There was a war on Earth,” Marie said, “that opened with a similar sneak attack. The only comment of the victorious Admiral was ‘I fear we have woken a sleeping giant’.”

"And to fill him with a terrible resolve, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto." said Tell

Ro' grinned at his crew. A war between the Klingons and the Gorn had been announced, and all they wanted was to be part of the action. "Stations! Qapla!"
